BIO of the artist

Sara Federici was born in Florence, Italy. After years of study and practice in Chinese Calligraphy, drawing, and figurative sculpture, she decided to dedicate herself full time ‘to create with her hands’ professionally, through the medium of clay.

Entirely self-taught, she began throwing on the wheel, while at the same time experimenting to create a unique color palette with her own slip and glaze recipes.

She works with stoneware and porcelain. Stoneware offers her more nuanced and natural colors through high-temperature firings, whereas she is attracted to the translucency of porcelain, especially for her Lighting.

After years of throwing, she started to incorporate hand building into her work. The sculpture of hand building allows her to express herself through clay in ways that throwing alone doesn't.

Artist's statement

Throughout my career and travels, I always been fascinated by how others create spaces and moods through interior design. With SFceramica, I bring together my passion for design with my unique collection of tableware, lighting, and vases. Being a small but meaningful part of your home and spaces is something I find incredibly rewarding.

Workshop details

The workshop will be an exploration of form, movement, and balance through clay. During these days, you will delve into the hand-building process of Spiral Vases coiling and pinching techniques. Under Sara's guidance, you will create your own versions of a small family of Spiral Vases in three different sizes. Throughout the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of coiling and pinching, including clay preparation, making and attaching flattened coils, and creating lines pinching. The focus will be on exploring intuitive and organic forms hand-building, emphasizing movement and balance through asymmetries and changes in direction. You will gain the skill of working simultaneously on three vases, taking advantage the varying drying times of each piece, while learning to create the same vase in three different sizes at the same time.

For a question of timing, the pieces will only be bisqued. You will be able to travel with them at a bisqued stage. We will make sure they are well wrapped for your journey back home.

If you are in Bali some more time, you will be able to glaze them after the workshop.
